Conspiracy theorists claim that big oil companies (Big Oil) do everything in their power to protect their profits and monopoly. On the one hand, they block or buy up innovative technologies; on the other, they bribe politicians to maintain their environmentally harmful practices. The most bizarre claim: even Greta Thunberg, the globally known climate activist, is a PR figure created by the oil industry to manipulate public opinion.
While it’s true that big oil companies have been involved in many questionable activities and scandals, the absurd theory about Greta is just a transparent attempt by far-right circles to discredit the activist – with no success so far.
