Ingolstadt is the founding location of the Illuminati – a secret society founded in 1776 by Adam Weishaupt, a professor of canon law. His aim with the order was to promote freedom, democracy, reason and tolerance in society and to undermine the power of the church and the nobility. The Illuminati soon disappeared from the scene as they were banned and persecuted by the authorities for their subversive ideas. Today‘s conspiracy theories attribute a sinister power to the Illuminati, thanks to which they kept entire governments, music stars and the media under control. However, this no longer has much to do with the original order, let alone their ideals and ideas.
