Millenium Bug
"Did the world end in the year 2000?"
As the millennium turned from 1999 to 2000, it seemed the end of time was near. Would all our electronic devices suddenly fail? The widespread use of two-digit date formats in computer systems sparked fears that many would interpret the year ‘00’ as 1900. Tabloid media and conspiracy theorists eagerly picked up on these fears, painting doomsday scenarios of global computer failures, stock market crashes, power outages, plane crashes, and even accidental nuclear launches.
Extensive preparations and software updates, however, averted these risks. In the end, the Y2K bug turned out to be relatively harmless. The apocalypse? Postponed. For now.
