Web Brigades

Web brigades are covert organizations, sometimes with hundreds of employees, paid to spread false information on the Internet. This includes a network of deceptively genuine-looking news websites. Centrally coordinated from Russia or China, the web brigades swarm out and flood social media platforms and online me- dia with posts and comments that all follow the same lines: they mock, insult, and incite. The mood is set for the government’s policies, while its opponents are ‘exposed’ with tall tales and false denunciations.

As social media becomes increasingly important for forming political opinions, such troll activities lead to a distortion of democratic decision-making processes. Entire elections are said to have been influenced in this way.
