In Washington D.C., Freemasonic symbolism abounds, both in the layout of the city and in many prominent structures such as the White House or the Capitol. All these architectural traces and numerous other clues, e.g. the pyramid and the All-Seeing Eye on the one-dollar bill, or the high percentage of Freemasons among U.S. Presidents, form an almost inexhaustible arsenal of evidence for the followers of an old speculation, revived by Dan Brown: the founding of the USA is alleged to be an evil deed of the Freema- sons, and to this day, they are said to pull the strings behind the scenes, working towards world domination. However, historians and experts view this theory as long-standing misunderstandings about the purpose and functioning of this community.
